Collection and shredding is June 21 at Mount St. Mary's Hospital main parking lot

Lewiston/Niagara-on-the-Lake Rotary Club will hold an event Saturday, June 21, allowing residents to not only help themselves, but do something nice for the community as well. The club will hold its second annual "Shred-It" fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the main (south) parking lot of Mount St. Mary's Hospital at 5300 Military Road. For a donation of $10 per banker's box (15 inches by 12 inches by 10 inches) or $25 for three boxes, residents can have bank statements, old insurance policies, outdated financial statements and documents pertaining to medical information shredded.

Shredding will be conducted in the southeast corner of the parking lot. Residents only need to drive up to the location and they will be able to watch as their documents are professionally and securely shredded.

With identity theft one of the fastest growing crimes in the U.S., the Rotary Club encourages residents to take advantage of this opportunity to protect themselves. Plus, the money raised will continue to support the maternity department at Mount St. Mary's and to help fund the many additional services and organizations the Lewiston/Niagara-on-the-Lake Rotary Club assists.

In the local community, the club has assisted the libraries and historical societies in both Lewiston and Niagara-on-the-Lake; provided defibrillators and other necessary equipment for the Lewiston Police Department; support for the coffee cart for patents, staff and family members at Mount St. Mary's; and funds for a new transport crib for newborns in the hospital's maternity department. In addition, the club continues the fight against cancer by supporting the Terry Fox Run in Canada and the Relay For Life in the U.S.

These are just some of the many initiatives undertaken by the club locally, with a large number of events internationally also supported by the organization, including young professional exchanges in India and The Netherlands and support for an annual medical mission by local health care providers to Chiapas, Mexico.

The LNOTL club meets every Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Water Street Landing in the Village of Lewiston. For additional information on the "Shred-It" event or becoming a member of the club, call Ron at 716-870-1307. Community members are always welcome to visit the club.
