Monday night, before family and friends, Daniel R. Gibson was sworn into office in the Village of Lewiston. Mayor Terry Collesano appointed Gibson, a Republican, to assume a portion of Democrat and former Trustee Dennis Brochey's term.

"Daniel Gibson is no stranger to Lewiston," Collesano said. "He's been a resident of Lewiston for the past 28 years. ... Dan has shown a lot of enthusiasm and a lot of get-up-and-go for being our next new trustee in the Village of Lewiston."

Gibson, 57, learned the Village Board was in need of a new trustee, and sent an application to Collesano.

"This is something I've been wanting to do for a really long time," he said. "I just thought the time was right to get involved. I want to be a difference maker."

Though Gibson is a member of the GOP, he said, "I don't see party lines."

"I think you do what's best for the community, and the people in the community. That's just the way I feel," he said. "A lot of people vote with the party lines, things like that. I just think you do what's the best for everybody involved - the community, the voters."

Gibson, who is employed as an operations manager for the Seneca Gaming Corp., admitted he is new to government.

"Well, I'm not a politician!" he said. Gibson added, "I'm a new face. I've never been involved in something like this before. I think I've got some great ideas."

He suggested it was a good idea for Collesano to appoint "one of the public."

"Bring a voter in - let's put it that way," he said.

Though he's not been privy to discussions on the village's most pressing issues, Gibson said, "I met with the mayor last week Thursday, and he kind of brought me up to speed on what projects we're working on. I'm ready to get my hands dirty."

Gibson's appointment ends in a few months. He said he plans to run for election in June, and fulfill this trustee position's final two years.

"I think this is a great village," Gibson said. "I actually fell in love with this village when I was a kid. I came down here to go to Fort Niagara. On a school field trip we went through this village. I was just like, 'Wow, this is a really cool little town.' Never knowing, later on, that I would end up here. I just, I fell in love with this town a long time ago."

"I think (the village has been working) great," he said. "Really; I believe the leadership has been fine. The village is doing great things. All the events we have - the festivals and stuff - every year they've gotten bigger and better."

Gibson is originally from Amherst. He has been married to Jamie Hibbard for 27 years. The two have a son, Taylor, 16, a student at Lewiston-Porter High School, and a daughter, Jordan, 23, who attends the University of South Florida.

Brochey resigned his position prior to taking office as supervisor in the Town of Lewiston on Jan. 1.
