The Miracle League of Grand Island and WNY Inc. is closer to realizing the dream of a handicapped-accessible playground at the Miracle League baseball complex in Veterans Park of Grand Island.

The Miracle League of Grand Island and WNY announced Dec. 21 that it is the recipient of a $60,000 grant from an anonymous donor. Members of the board of directors accepted a $60,000 grant to be used toward the construction of the playground, a disability-friendly play area, purpose-built to accommodate all children.

In addition to the immediate grant, a matching challenge has also been made. If monies raised by the Miracle League from now through April 2014 can reach the $25,000 amount, a $25,000 matching grant will be donated by this anonymous donor.

The donations, combined with the contributions of all supporters and the substantial earnings from the Summer Carnival, will allow groundbreaking for the construction of the planned playground to begin in the spring of 2014.

Donations to the Miracle League are still being accepted through PayPal on the website, www.miracleleaguewny.org, or by mail at Miracle League of Grand Island & WNY, P.O. Box 833, Grand Island, NY 14072.
