Castellani Art Museum to host programs in honor of Day of the Dead

The Castellani Art Museum of Niagara University is hosting a week-long celebration in honor of El Día de los Muertos, a Mexican and Mexican-American festival in which participants remember those who have died and entice their souls to visit by building ofrenda, altars decorated with photos of deceased loved ones, dishes of their favorite foods, religious items, pungent marigolds, and candles to help light their way.

Castellani Art Museum Sculpture Court

A special community altar built by Leonel Rosario of Medina will be available in the Castellani Art Museum Sculpture Court. Members of the on-campus and surrounding community are invited add their own photographs and memorabilia.

Film presentation with traditional foods

Friday, Nov. 1, 10 a.m.-noon

Castellani Art Museum Main Gallery

Rosario will show footage of Day of the Dead festivities filmed in his hometown in Oaxaca and talk about his experiences in Mexico and Western New York. Traditional foods provided by his restaurant, Mariachi de Oro Mexican Grill, will be served. All are welcome.

This event is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.

The Castellani Art Museum of Niagara University is open Tuesday-Saturday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m., and Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. Admission is free.
