What secrets and mysteries lie beneath the depths of Lake Ontario? Local author Susan Peterson Gateley will discuss her new book, "Legends and Lore of Lake Ontario," Saturday, Sept. 28, at 11 a.m. at the Niagara History Center.

The lake's Huron name, "Ontario," means "Lake of Shining Waters." Those waters guard their secrets, which have grown into local legends over the years. Gateley's book offers historic tales of Lake Ontario's sailors fearing sea monsters and ghosts, and Native Americans' rich lore of spirits, serpents and heroes. Stories abound of smugglers who have plied the lake from the War of 1812 to Prohibition to the present day. The lake has also been the site of terrible storms, shipwrecks and daring rescues, and their accounts live on.

Gateley's book also tells the tale of the real Maid of the Mist and the source of unique Lake Ontario location names such as Soup Harbor and Devil's Nose. In her History Center presentation, she will share all these colorful stories and legends, fact and fiction, past and present, which continue to fascinate those of us living along Ontario's shores.

Gateley sails and writes on Lake Ontario. Prior to pursuing a career in writing and publishing, she was a fisheries biologist and high school science teacher.

Her talk is free and open to the public.
