Area resident and occupational therapist is a two-time cancer survivor

Longtime Orchard Park resident Elyse NeMoyer has joined the Roswell Park Cancer Institute board of directors. An occupational therapist, she was appointed to a three-year term on the board by State Sen. Andrea Stewart-Cousins, Democratic Conference Leader for the New York State Senate, based on the recommendation of State Sen. Timothy Kennedy.

NeMoyer is a staff occupational therapist with Aspire of Western New York. She has also worked as a consultant for People Inc.'s day treatment center and as coordinator of medical courses for the University at Buffalo School of Occupational Therapy.

A two-time cancer survivor, NeMoyer has been treated at RPCI for both breast cancer, beginning in 1995, and acute myeloid leukemia, beginning in 2007.

"I think it's important that I'll be able to bring the patient's and survivor's perspective to my role on the board," NeMoyer said. "There are so many considerations that come into your life as a result of cancer diagnosis and treatment, things that you don't face and probably can't understand until you've gone through them or watched someone you love go through them, and I'm pleased that I'll have a chance to bring those insights to bear in our board discussions."

NeMoyer holds a master's degree in occupational therapy from Columbia University and a bachelor's degree from Binghamton University. She served on the Erie County Medical Center board of managers from 1997 to 2001.

A native of White Plains, she has been married for 36 years to the Hon. Patrick NeMoyer, a New York State Supreme Court justice serving in Erie County. The NeMoyers are parents to four adult daughters.

The mission of Roswell Park Cancer Institute is to understand, prevent and cure cancer.
