The New York State Center for Assisted Living has announced the state of New York resolution proclaiming Sept. 8-14 as Assisted Living Week, in conjunction with National Assisted Living Week. Senate Resolution No. 2356, by Sen. Kemp Hannon, recognizes this special week, the services that assisted living communities provide, and encourages the citizens of New York to visit friends, family and loved ones who reside in assisted living and to learn more about the services and how assisted living communities benefit society.

The resolution is posted on the NYSCAL website, www.nyscal.org.

National Assisted Living Week is sponsored annually by NYSCAL's national affiliate, the National Center for Assisted Living. This year's theme, "Homemade Happiness," acknowledges the contributions of staff, residents and families in making the assisted living community a home for residents. "Homemade Happiness" events also help say "thank you" to assisted living residents, many of whom have made significant contributions to local communities as business people, civic leaders, firefighters, teachers, parents and grandparents.

"This year's theme celebrates the bond created by staff, residents and families as they build warm, welcoming and vibrant homes for residents," said Shelley Wagar Sabo, NYSCAL executive director. "This weeklong celebration demonstrates the commitment assisted living professionals feel when providing care and services to residents in their communities."

NALW was established in 1995 by the National Center for Assisted Living to provide a special opportunity to bring together residents, families, employees, volunteers and the surrounding community to celebrate residents and the services provided by the staff within assisted living communities. Every year, the week-long celebration begins on Grandparent's Day.
