Assemblyman John Ceretto, R-C-I-Lewiston, voted Thursday in favor of an exemption for qualified retired police officers from the provisions of the SAFE Act. While Ceretto maintains his opposition to the SAFE Act as a whole and wants to see the entire law repealed, he views this exemption as another step toward the process of total repeal.
"The SAFE Act is a very bad law that was passed through a very bad process," he said. "This is why we had to amend the law during the budget negotiations, and we had to return to amend the law again five months later. The law as a whole must be repealed.
"In the meantime, this exemption gives Second Amendment rights back to at least a segment of the population. I look forward to the day that Second Amendment rights are restored for all law-abiding citizens."
