Gertrude Schilke Reimann, 103, of Grand Island, died Dec. 8, 2012.
She was born in Canada in 1909 to Anna and Adolph Schilke. The family settled in the U.S., where they became naturalized citizens. Gertrude learned the English language in the Buffalo City Schools and graduated from Hutchinson Central High School. In 1929, she graduated from Buffalo State Teachers College with a degree in education. She taught in the Buffalo City Schools and retired in 1968 from the Grand Island school system.
Gertrude was a longtime resident of Grand Island, where she and her beloved Howard raised their family. She was a founding member of St. Timothy Lutheran Church and was a past president of the Order of Amaranths.
Gertrude enjoyed an active life on the river, spending her time swimming, boating and just contemplating the beauty of the Niagara. She also was an avid bicyclist and reader. She loved hosting square dances at her home.
Gertrude is survived by her children: Trudy (James) O'Connor, Eric (Elizabeth) Reimann, Claire (Stephen) Royce, and Timothy (Margaret Aliene) Reimann.
She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held April 27, at 2 p.m., at St. Timothy Lutheran Church.
