The U.S. Border Patrol's Buffalo Sector participated in numerous charity events this month to provide assistance to local communities during the holiday season.
Buffalo Border Patrol employees donated approximately $50,000 to the Combined Federal Campaign program, which ended Dec. 15. CFC is the world's largest annual workplace charity campaign. Buffalo Sector increased its donations by $1,000 from last year's totals, which accounted for 9 percent of Western New York's CFC efforts.
On Dec. 1, agents ran into the chilling water of Lake Erie participating in the 2012 Polar Plunge to benefit the Special Olympics of New York. More than 10 agents and employees participated, raising more than $2,300. The money raised will allow six athletes to participate in Special Olympics for an entire year.
Border Patrol employees also organized a giving tree for the City Mission of Buffalo; a total of 36 hats and 57 mittens were donated and will go to great use during Buffalo's cold winters. Border Patrol also teamed up with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program and collected more than 75 new, unwrapped toys. These toys will be distributed to needy children in the local community.
Finally, Border Patrol, Niagara University and other local law-enforcement agencies worked together to collect and donate more than 2,000 pounds of food to the Food Bank of Western New York in Niagara Falls.
