The Tuscarora Indian School K-Kids recently concluded its 11th annual Canned Food Drive. Club adviser Paul Beatty reports the event encourages students in pre-K through sixth grade to collect non-perishable food items that are donated to families in need during the holiday season.
This year, the kids were able to collect more than 300 items. Employees from the Niagara-Wheatfield District Office also contributed three large boxes of food to help the cause. All of the items will be distributed to Native American families through the Tuscarora Indian Mission.
As an extra incentive, Jay's Place has agreed to donate two hours of ice time and skate rentals at the Lewiston Ice Rink for the classes that collected the most items. This year, Sue Stanton's second-grade class, along with RoseAnn Heilemann's third grade and Beatty's fourth grade, will get to enjoy this special treat.
Beatty explained that K-Kids is a "student-led" community service organization sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Lewiston. "Our objective is to provide opportunities for working together in service to both school and community; to develop leadership potential; to foster the development of strong moral character; and to encourage loyalty to school, community and nation."
