Workers from the Apollo Steel Company have erected the 95-by-70-foot addition to the Lewiston No. 1 Volunteer Fire Co. firehall on North Sixth Street in the Village of Lewiston. With a completion date forecasted for April 2013, the building's progress has moved along steadily throughout the past couple of months.
"We have carpenters inside working on the walls of the second floor, and our foundation contractor is currently working on the foundation for the front vestibule and other entrances," said Lewiston No. 1 President Les Myers.
He said the new addition will now be able to be closed off from the weather elements so work can be continued unimpeded in the coming winter months.
The entire project is the second major addition to the original building, which was constructed in 1955. A 70-by-70-foot, two-story addition was added in 1966 to house the fire trucks and increase the size of the social hall.
