The Niagara River will be roaring with excitement as the weekend of the 73rd annual "Thunder on the Niagara" event is coming soon.

Crowds are sure to gather on the shores of Grand Island and Gratwick Park in North Tonawanda to see the hydroplane races. The event is slated for the weekend of Aug. 18 and 19. It will include 18 racing hydroplanes, including four vintage race boats competing for the North American Championship Series. Racers are coming from places throughout the country like Cincinnati, Palm City, Fla., and several locations within New York, including a few from Grand Island. The weekend will be complete with food and craft vendors as well as public pit access, and a beer tent.

Sponsors for this year's race are Towne Auto, the American Power Boat Association, the Canadian Boating Federation, the Chamber of Commerce of the Tonawandas, and the city of North Tonawanda.
