A recent view of safety data from more than 1,000 hospitals in 44 states by Consumer Reports magazine shows that Mount St. Mary's Hospital is ranked in the Top 10 for safety in New York.

Mount St. Mary's was ranked eighth on the list, which covered such issues as infections, readmissions, communication and scanning.

"Our staff takes pride in working everyday to ensure the safety of our patients, and we are very pleased with our results," said Judith A. Maness, president and CEO at Mount St. Mary's. "At the same time, we know that we still have areas in which we can improve and we work on them every day. Patient care and safety is our highest priority. We consider safety a core value, and as important as reverence, integrity, wisdom, creativity, dedication and service of the poor."

"We recognize that the ratings are a snapshot in time and that we must always be vigilant," Maness said. She noted that is one of the reasons why Mount St. Mary's has recently advanced a program called "Healing Without Harm," which involves specific training of all staff and physicians.

At Mount St. Mary's the program touches every associate and includes concepts and specific action steps that must be applied every day.

Maness also said that patients should always talk with their physicians and hospital staff if they have questions about safety or care.
