Colonial Village Elementary School in Wheatfield celebrated Flag Day in grand style on June 14.
The honor guard from the 914th Airlift Wing at the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station presented the flag to a sea of red, white and blue and showed students how to unfold, present and refold the flag. First-grade teacher Elizabeth Potempa started the tradition of students and faculty gathering in the gym to honor the American flag five years ago. Fifth-grade students presented information about how the flag was first created, how the flag has inspired others and interesting flag facts. The program concluded with students singing several patriotic songs, including "The Allegiance Rap" and "I Love My Country" in sign language.
Each child received a flag donated by 1st Sgt. Dennis Smilinich, a 20-year veteran, on behalf of the veterans from Tonawanda American Legion Post 264. (photo by Jill Gonzalez)
