The SPCA of Niagara now has 83 candidates to consider for its new board of directors.

Members of the SPCA (anyone who donated $15 or more between March 1, 2011, and Feb. 29, 2012) were invited to come to the Shawnee Volunteer Fire Company firehall in Sanborn on Monday to submit up to three candidates.

Interim Director Amy Lewis said about 2,700 members were eligible to participate, but only 67 came to the meeting.

The SPCA's recently established nominating committee will go over the resumes submitted and choose about 20 candidates. The membership will have an opportunity to vote for those candidates for the 15-member board at the annual May election, she said.

Current Board President Bruno "Brandy" Scrufari is among board members who have announced they will not seek re-election.
