Tops Friendly Markets, a leading full-service grocery retailer in upstate New York and northern Pennsylvania, announced Monday that, through customer support, $160,107 has been donated to the Food Bank of Western New York in the annual "Check Out Hunger" campaign. Annually, Tops runs a two-week campaign where customers are asked to donate $2, $3, or $5 at check out, with proceeds benefiting the food bank.

"We are proud to support the Food Bank of Western New York in its mission of obtaining nutritious food for the hungry in western New York," said Andrew Brocato, Tops director of community relations. "As a grocery retailer and a Western New York neighbor, it is the mission of Tops to eradicate hunger in Western New York through our partnership with the Food Bank."

"Tops, their customers and employees deserve accolades for the record-setting success of this campaign," said Marylou Borowiak, president and CEO of the Food Bank of WNY. "Hunger can strike at any time, and the fight to end hunger remains an everyday, 365 day-a-year mission."

Tops participated in the national "Check Out Hunger" campaign from Jan. 22 to Feb. 11. Customers who contributed to the campaign were automatically entered to win a three-minute shopping spree. Annually, Tops donates more than $5 million in cash and reclaimed food to regional food banks within its marketing area.
