Between Feb. 17 and 20, people all over North America will be counting birds seen in the winter. Both the National Audubon Society and Cornell Lab of Ornithology encourage bird enthusiasts in WNY to participate in this event called "The Great Backyard Bird Count."

Beginners interested in identifying birds are invited to view mounted specimens of local bird species in the Nature Center at Bond Lake Park in Lewiston at 1 p.m. Feb. 12. A guided "Winter Bird Walk" will be led by Patty Freck at 1:30 p.m. to further assist participants in identifying birds that might be seen in their own backyards. Be sure to bring binoculars. Note that high winds or icy conditions that day will cancel this event.

The "Winter Bird Walk" is a free event, sponsored by the Bond Lake Environmental and Beautification Committee. For more information, call Carol at 694-3488. To find out more about the "Great Backyard Bird Count" in general go to the website www.birdsource.org/gbbc.a.
