Lewiston Public Library February programs, events and activities

The Lewiston Public Library, 305 S. Eighth St., in the Village of Lewiston, announces the following programs, events and activities for the month of February.

•AARP Tax Aid Service returns for the 2012 tax season. Sign up for a free appointment with a representative from AARP's tax aid service. Appointments are available on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:30 until 3:30 p.m. Call the library at 754-4720.

Family Programs

•Evening story time: "I Love You This Much!" a monthly story time for all ages with crafts, music, stories and fun takes place Tuesday, Feb. 7, at 6 p.m. at the library.

•"Art with Val Teal" will be offered Saturdays, Feb. 11, 18 and 25, at 11 a.m. at the library. Registration is required to ensure enough supplies. Call 754-4720 for more information.

•"Touch Tank" with the Aquarium of Niagara Falls visits on Tuesday, Feb. 21, with shows at 3 and 3:30 p.m. Registration is required as there are limited spots available per session. Adults interested in handling the animals must register as a participant.

•"Family Bingo Day," an event for all ages, will be held Wednesday, Feb. 22, at 1:30 p.m. Younger children are welcome to participate; the library will be offering books as prizes at this event.

•"Lego Building Day," for those who enjoy creative play with Legos, will take place Thursday, Feb. 23, at 2 p.m.

The library will supply Legos in various sizes for different ages

•A Junie B. Jones party, featuring stories, games, crafts and more, takes place Friday, Feb. 24, at 2 p.m. Participants are invited to dress up like a Junie B. character.

Special Events

•Genealogy using local resources, a free instructional session with Jim Lawson, family history center librarian, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, takes place Saturday, Feb. 18, at 1 p.m.

•"A Bob Giannetti Poetry Reading: A special afternoon of poetry," celebrating the award-winning works of Lewiston's own poet, Bob Giannetti, takes place on Saturday, Feb. 25, at 1:30 p.m. The event is open to the public.

•Snowshoeing, presented by staff from the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, will be offered on Tuesday, Feb. 28, at 4 p.m. Participants will learn about the different types of snowshoes and practice outside; dress for the weather. Adults are welcome and registration is required to ensure an ample supply of snowshoes. If there is not enough snow, the event will be rescheduled. For further information call 754-4720.

Clubs and More

•The Lewiston Book Club will hold its next meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 7, at 1:30 p.m. For further information, contact Anita Mallimo at 754-7714.

•The Lewiston Writers' Group will meet on Tuesdays, Feb. 7 and 21, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Lewiston Library. For further, information visit www.lewistonwritersgroup.com.

•Moms Book Chat will meet Thursday, Feb. 16, at 7 p.m. Discussed will be "Love in the Time of Cholera," by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

•The Knitting Club meets every Friday from 1 to 3 p.m. For more information, contact Ellen Comerford at 754-4144. No registration is required and knitters of all skill levels are welcome.

•The Dead Beats Society will meet on Friday, Feb. 3, at 1 p.m. in the Local History Room. Call Michelle at the library for details, or email at [email protected].

•Personal instructional genealogy appointments may be made on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to noon. Call the library to arrange an appointment or email Michelle Kratts at [email protected].

•The Friends of the Lewiston Public Library maintain a used book room all year long. It's open during library hours. Items for sale include fiction, non-fiction, and children's materials.

•February meetings for the month include the Lewiston Library board of trustees, Monday, Feb. 6, at 5 p.m.; and Friends of the Library, Tuesday, Feb. 14, at 6 p.m.

Weekly Story Time

•"Alphabet Soup" with Miss Ann, for children ages 3 to 5, will be held on Mondays, Feb. 6, 13 and 27, at 10:30 a.m.

•Lapsit story time with Miss Ann, children age birth to 23 months, will be held on Wednesdays, Feb. 1, 8, 15 and 29, at 9:30 a.m.

•Toddler hour with Miss Ann, for children ages 24 months to 3 years, will be held on Wednesdays, Feb. 1, 8, 15 and 29, at 10:30 a.m.

•Story time with Mrs. Leardini, for children of all ages, will take place on Thursdays, Feb. 2, 9 and 16, at 10:30 a.m.

•Tail Waggin' Tutors continues at the Lewiston Public Library. Utilizing certified therapy dogs for a time of reading fun, the 20 minute reading session is a great way to help your child become a better reader. Sessions this month will be held on Feb. 4, 6, 7, 11, 13, 14, 18, 25, 27 and 28. For more information, contact Ann Siejka at the library, 754-4720.

Library hours: Monday-Tuesday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Wednesday-Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Friday, noon to 5 p.m.; and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Lewiston Public Library will be closed on Monday, Feb. 20, in recognition of Presidents' Day.
