Open enrollment for Medicare plans has begun

Congresswoman Louise Slaughter, NY-28th district, has encouraged all seniors and their families to take advantage of Medicare's open enrollment.

Open enrollment, now under way, is the yearly opportunity to review Medicare health care to prescription drug coverage and see if you need to make any changes, or if you would like to keep your current plan.

Because of the Affordable Care Act, the open enrollment period for all Medicare plans begins earlier this year, Slaughter said, giving seniors and their families more time to take advantage of the increased benefits, improved choices, and lower costs.

This year's open enrollment period will last through Dec. 7, which will allow Medicare time to process all changes so coverage can begin without a hitch on Jan. 1.

"Medicare is stronger than ever, and I encourage everyone to look into the new options available to you or someone you love," said Slaughter, a long-time defender of Medicare. "I'd especially encourage everyone to review the free preventative services now available thanks to health care reform."
