Witmer Road chemical fire

Residents in an area extending one-half mile from the area of Hyde Park Boulevard and Witmer Road in the Town of Niagara were asked to stay inside the evening of Sept. 9 due to a chemical fire at Stollberg Inc.

The Niagara County Sheriff's Office received 911 calls at 9:33 p.m. reporting a fire at Stollberg, 4111 Witmer Road. Approximately 4,500 pounds of aluminum powder exploded in a railroad car, causing minor damage to the building. One plant worker was treated and released from Mount St. Mary's Hospital. No firefighters were injured.

Chief James Suitor of the Town of Niagara Police was assigned to the scene. Fire companies responding included Niagara Active Hose, Frontier, Sanborn, Upper Mountain, Lewiston No. 1, Lewiston No. 2, and the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station. Tri-Community and Rural/Metro ambulances also were on scene.
