The Niagara County Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatal accident involving two motorcycles, which occurred in the area of 1500 Upper Mountain Road, Town of Lewiston, at about 10 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23.

One operator, Jeremy R. Carlstedt, 23, of Lockport, was pronounced dead at the scene, and the other operator, David A. Zuppa, 24, of Lockport, was taken to Erie County Medical Center with injuries. He was listed in fair condition Wednesday.

Initial investigation revealed the motorcycles were traveling together in an eastbound direction when they failed to negotiate a curve. Both motorcycles went off the road and struck a culvert.

In a written follow-up report, the NCSO wrote, "Our department's continuing investigation shows that the two motorcycles were eastbound on Ridge Road near Indian Hill Road. The motorcycles were operating recklessly and passed an unmarked patrol vehicle. The unmarked patrol vehicle activated its emergency lights in an attempt to stop the motorcycles. The motorcycles continued operating recklessly southbound on Indian Hill Road, failing to yield to the patrol vehicle. The motorcycles then made a sharp left turn onto Upper Mountain Road. Upon turning onto Upper Mountain Road, the motorcycles increased their speed. The patrol vehicle fell back, losing direct sight of both motorcycles.

"The patrol vehicle continued eastbound on Upper Mountain Road and came upon the accident scene. On continuing investigation, one of the motorcycle operators was interviewed. The driver interviewed stated both motorcycles failed to stop for the patrol vehicle, because both drivers were operating on suspended drivers licenses. The accident remains under investigation as we are continuing to interview witnesses who are coming forward that had observed the motorcycles operating recklessly prior to the accident."

Anyone who may have been in the area at the time of the accident and has information that could aid in this investigation can contact Capt. Michael Dunn or Capt. Michael Filicetti at 438-3393.
