On Monday evening, July 25, Old Fort Niagara and the Town of Porter Historical Society will join to commemorate the 252nd anniversary of the Battle of La Belle Famille with a walking tour of the original battle site. On July 24, 1759, early in the morning, La Belle Famille was just a clearing in the woods where Youngstown stands today. The Battle between 800 French soldiers and 464 British troops raged over most of what is now the village's downtown business district. The decisive and bloody battle doomed the French Fort Niagara.
The tour is free and open to all. Those wishing to participate should arrive at Falkner Park in Youngstown on Monday, July 25, by 6:45 p.m. The tour will begin in the park at 7 p.m., move to the site of a bloody skirmish at Bloody Run on the south end of town, then return to Main and Lockport streets where the main action took place. Those interested in participating are advised to dress for the occasion.
