Local Girl Scout Troop 951 is busy preparing costumes for the "Flames Through Lewiston" event to be held on Saturday, Dec. 18, at 7 p.m. on Center Street in Lewiston. The Girl Scouts, along with other volunteers, will re-enact the exodus of Lewiston residents who ran for their lives down Center Street to escape the British attack on Dec. 19, 1813, during the War of 1812, when the village was burning to the ground. Men from the Tuscarora Nation intervened and temporarily stopped the attack, saving dozens of lives.

Girl Scouts included in the picture (first row, from left) are: Emily Oliverio, Chelsea Berner, Annie Fleck, Aislinn Campbell, Mia DiPasquale, and (back row, from left) Kelsey Oliverio, Kate Coykendall, and Sarah Wright.  Jodee Riordan (Sarah Wright's mom) is the troop leader, and Amy Coykendall (Sara and Katelyn's mom) is the assistant leader. Also lending a hand in the effort is Claudia Andres (Sarah Andre's mom) and Lorrie Mandell (Aislinn Campbell's mom.)

"Flames Through Lewiston," which will feature 10 large fires down the middle of Center Street, is sponsored by Wendt's Propane and organized by the Historical Association of Lewiston. It is free and the public is invited to attend.
