Niagara Active Hose President Robert E. Jasper Jr. is due back in Wheatfield Town Court on July 13 after a conference with the assistant district attorney on Tuesday.

Jasper was arrested for drinking and driving after he was involved in an accident early June 6 while driving a fire department sport utility vehicle at Niagara Falls Boulevard and Sy Road in Wheatfield. According to a Niagara County Sheriff's Office report, Jasper said he was unable to avoid a Toyota driven by a North Tonawanda woman when it pulled in front of him at Sy Road. A passenger in that car received a minor neck injury.

The report indicated that Jasper, who admitted he earlier drank about six beers while golfing, failed field sobriety tests and his blood alcohol content, checked shortly after the collision, was 0.11 percent. The legal limit for driving is 0.08 percent.

According to fire department officials, Jasper, as president, has access to the vehicle and is on call full time. However, after the accident, he was taken off active duty.
