Students at St. John Lutheran School recently enjoyed a visit from Andy Parker, a meteorologist from Channel 2 news, who talked about his science project, Mission 2 the Sky. This project will help test, launch and retrieve a vehicle that will travel by balloon to the top of the atmosphere and literally half way to space. The unit will carry several cameras and will take images and videos throughout its journey. Students in fifth through eighth grade (some shown above) broke up into teams to do experiments to help this project be successful, including determining speed and direction of the wind, calculating lift, temperature change and GPS locater. Their results would help determine the flight pattern of the weather balloon. Many students from St. John were able to witness the balloon lifting off on Tuesday, May 25, from Buffalo Niagara International Airport.
