More winter weather and high winds on the way

AAA offers advice to homeowners and motorists amid winter winds

A mix of wintry weather is in the forecast following a windstorm across the region earlier this week. AAA is offering advice to both motorists and homeowners as they recover from one storm and prepare for what’s next. For those out driving, be prepared:

√ Keep an eye on the weather forecast and plan accordingly.

√ Dress warmly and carry extra clothes including a hat, gloves, mittens and socks.

√ Make sure your gas tank is full, put at least one blanket in your car, as well as a shovel in your trunk.

√ Carry bottled water and snacks in case you do get stranded.

√ Ensure that you have your cellphone and a charger.

√ Avoid traveling alone or let someone know where you are going, and keep in touch.

“For football fans attending the Buffalo Bills game, give yourself extra time on busy roads that may be ice or snow covered, and avoid using your car radio for music while tailgating to prevent draining the battery,” said Jeremy Harrington, fleet manager at AAA Western and Central New York. “AAA will have technicians on standby in Highmark Stadium parking lots in case anyone breaks down. The service is available to all ticketholders.”

Widespread damage was reported this week after high winds. With winds kicking up once again, AAA Insurance is reminding homeowners to take precautions to protect their belongings. Those who experienced damage to their homes should begin filing claims immediately. After such a storm, the first order of business is to protect yourself and your family. The second is to call your insurance company. Here are AAA’s insurance tips:

√ Contact your insurance company as soon as possible if you experience storm damage.

√ Make a list of what was damaged. If property or items need repair, be sure to take photos and/or videos.

√ Make minor repairs. After taking photos and/or videos, make minor repairs to prevent further destruction and to keep you and your possessions safe.

√ Keep notes and receipts for any out-of-pocket services and expenses for any home repairs or living expenses such as hotel bills. Depending on your policy, costs may be covered, but be sure to know the limits beforehand by checking with your insurance agent.

In 2022, winter storms in the U.S. resulted in an estimated $6 billion in insured losses, according to the Insurance Information Institute. Protect your vehicle by going slow on ice and snow and leaving a doughnut of space around your car when driving. Prepare your home for winter storms by checking your heating system and inspecting and insulating pipes. When safe to do so, clean out gutters, trim trees and remove dead branches, and seal exterior cracks and holes.
