Respite available for moms

The Women’s Respite Program, a nonprofit organization under the Francis Center umbrella, will host a weekend just for moms with kids on the autism spectrum. The event will take place Sept. 29 to Oct. 1.

A press release stated, “If you are raising a child on the autism spectrum and are at least 25 years old, you are eligible to apply to the Women’s Respite Program for a weekend designed just for you. Spend time with other moms who share some of your experiences. You can rest and relax and enjoy the optional activities, such as arts and crafts, yoga, massage, and group discussion. If you just want to sleep, be our guest.”

This weekend retreat will be held at the Center of Renewal on the campus of Stella Niagara in Lewiston. Events begin at 4 p.m. Friday and continue until 2 p.m. Sunday. The Women’s Respite Program may be able to help with transportation; guest can inquire about a ride.

The press release continued, “We provide everyone with a modest, private room, and all meals. We expect to host a group of 12 to 18 moms. If we receive more applications than we can accommodate, we will create a waiting list. Women on the waiting list are often called to attend.

“Note that single moms and women with low incomes will be given priority.

“You will need to arrange for your own child care.

“There is no cost, but we ask for a $20 donation at the time of the program.”

After the deadline, registrants will receive a letter or email letting them know if their application is accepted, plus additional details such as what to pack.

The Women’s Respite Program has been serving women in Western New York for more than 30 years. The offerings it provides are designed to give a few days of rest to women who need time off from their stressful lives.
