NFL-quality training to treat critically injured high school athletes

Niagara Falls High School is hosting a sports emergency care training on Friday for high school sports coaches, athletic trainers, EMS, physicians, school resource officers and firefighters. Sports Medicine Concepts, a company that provides life-saving training for the NFL, is providing the instruction. Thirty-five athletic trainers and 35 high school football, wrestling, swimming, and basketball coaches from area schools are taking part. Simulations include athletes in full equipment experiencing injuries such as isolated head trauma, cervical spine, truncal trauma, and cardiac arrest. There will also be sessions on football equipment removal skills and immobilization techniques.

Events begin Aug. 11 with health care workers, school resource officers, EMS and Niagara Falls Fire Department from 8 a.m. to noon. Then, from 1-5 p.m., Niagara Frontier League football, wrestling, swimming and basketball coaches, and athletic trainers.

Both sessions will take place at Calandrelli Field, 3980 Pine Ave., Niagara Falls.
