Erie County can help keep homes and families cool & comfortable

It seems like summer has just started and already it’s going too fast. I have been enjoying spending time at various district events, including the Grand Island Fourth of July parade, Italian Heritage Festival, and the children’s concerts here in Kenmore. I also try to spend as much time with family as possible, which, as you can see pictured here, is quite sizeable (but I wouldn’t have it any other way). Having family that lives in Black Rock, North Buffalo and Grand Island makes supporting this district that much more fulfilling.

As we all hope to spend as much time enjoying outdoor activities while the weather is so beautiful, I wanted to share all of the resources Erie County has available throughout the summer months, including assistance with keeping your homes and families cool and comfortable.

Erie County is home to numerous, parks, beaches, trails and outdoor recreational facilities. County parks located in my district include Towpath, Black Rock Canal and Isle View County Park. Although not county-owned, beautiful views of the water can be found by exploring another Olmstead treasure we’re lucky to have: Riverside Park. Beaver Island and Niawanda Park also offer striking views and peaceful surroundings. I encourage you to explore these parks. The Erie County website provides detailed information about the facilities and activities available, whether that be fishing, bicycle riding, bird watching, hiking, picnicking, and if there are sporting fields and courts. There’s something for everyone.

Although winter is associated with treacherous conditions, summer does not come without its difficulties. Extremely hot temperatures can prove to be detrimental, and it’s important to know the signs of overexposure – especially for those residents who are more vulnerable. Since many of the sporting events, festivals and parades involve extended periods of time in direct sun, it’s crucial to be prepared. Just as HEAP can provide relief during the harsh winter months, it can also help keep your homes cool and comfortable during the summer. If you were unable to attend the HEAP assistance workshop myself and Legislator Bargnesi offered at the Kenmore Library last week, please know you can still submit applications for the program until Aug. 31 (or funds are exhausted).
