A Veterans Day program for children ages 7 to 11 will take place at the Niagara History Center from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11. The theme this year will be “Native American War Heroes” and will commemorate the local Tuscarora Heroes who assisted Lewiston residents escape the British and hostile Indian attack in 1813; as well as U.S. Union Army Officer Ely Parker, a Tonawanda Seneca, who penned the surrender terms at Appomattox, ending the Civil War.

The Navaho Code Talkers, a group of World War II marines who used their native language to create secret codes that could not be deciphered by the enemy forces, will also be highlighted. Activities include touring the History Center’s Tuscarora Nation exhibit, making a beaded bracelet, assembling and playing a game of skill using natural materials, writing with a quill pen, and creating and decoding secret messages.

The program takes place at the Niagara History Center, 215 Niagara St., Lockport. The cost is $15 per child and includes a snack and all supplies. Preregistration is necessary. The public can call the Niagara History Center at 716-434-7433 or at [email protected] for more information and registration.
