EPIC, Say Yes Buffalo partner to bring Strong African American Families Program to WNY

EPIC – Every Person Influences Children and Say Yes Buffalo are partnering to bring the Strong African American Families Program to Western New York.

A press release stated, “The goal of SAAF is to build on the strengths of African American families, and support parents and youth during the transition from early adolescence to the teen years with a specific emphasis on helping young people avoid risky and dangerous behaviors.”

EPIC Director of Parenting Programs Dawn Askew said, "We are committed to building a stronger community and happy to deliver a program that puts the injustices of African Americans at the forefront. This program will build on African Americans' resilience and many strengths to effectively deal with racism, reduce risky behaviors in youth, and develop a stronger sense of family values and racial pride."

The program will be delivered from 5-7:30 p.m. Tuesdays at East High School and Wednesdays at Bennett High School. Dinner is included. Youth ages 10-14 and their caregivers then meet separately, coming back together as a family at the close of each session. Activities include games, discussions and art, all focused on promoting positive youth development and family relationships.

“We know that African American families often face a set of challenges that are unique to their experience in American society,” said Nikki Cocerez, Say Yes Buffalo parent and Family Center manager. “We’re proud to partner with EPIC on this much-needed initiative to help strengthen Buffalo families, because we know stronger families produce stronger, more resilient students.”
