A pair of foundations serving impoverished communities on two continents will be the beneficiaries of an event for cigar lovers being held Friday, Oct. 7, on the Tuscarora Nation Reservation.

The event, titled “The Cigar Bazaar in Indian Country,” will take place from 4-8 p.m. at Smoking Joes Cigar Shop and Lounge, 2293 Saunders Settlement Road. A highlight of the bazaar will be a meet and greet with Bobby Newman, the third-generation owner of J.C. Newman cigars.

Co-sponsored by J.C. Newman and Arturo Fuente, leading manufacturers of premium cigars, the purpose of the event is to create awareness and generate donations for the Cigar Family Charitable Foundation and the Skaru:re Community Foundation. Both foundations are endorsed and supported by Smokin Joes.

The Cigar Family Charitable Foundation was founded in 2001 to provide significant humanitarian impact in areas such as nutrition, education and health care to impoverished communities in the cigar-producing Bonao region of the Dominican Republic.

The event's $80 “Dinner for Donation Package” will include a 5 p.m. dinner catered by The Brickyard Pub & BBQ, four premium cigars, a commemorative T-shirt, a Tuscarora Indian Native-made woodwork gift item, and entry into raffles. Net proceeds from the “Dinner for the Donation” package will be evenly shared by the two foundations, as will all proceeds from the event's auctions and raffles.

The Skaru:re Community Foundation was founded in the summer of 2021 to provide programs that improve the quality of life for members of the Tuscarora Nation. Programs address areas such as health services, education and the arts.
