The question of the continuation of Sanborn American Legion Post 969 will be addressed at a post meeting to be held on Oct. 3 at 7:30 p.m. at the SAHS Farm Museum, 2660 Saunders Settlement Road (Route 31), Sanborn.

Cmdr. Richard Baker indicated that our post members are all getting older. Most of us or our spouses have health issues that need our care.

We have donated our building to the Sanborn Area Historical Society. We have returned our M1 rifles to the government since we are no longer capable of forming an honor guard. We are finding it harder to meet a quorum that has been dropped to five at our regular meetings.

Our treasurer, Lloyd Ziemendorf, who has been treasurer for many, many years, has been in DeGraff Hospital for the past several weeks. He indicated that he will no longer be treasurer when he gets out. I have been commander by default for the last 20 years. This is normally a one-year term. Our adjutant, Gerry Treichler, at age 92, will not be around forever. He has records on his computer that he will gladly give to anyone that wants to take over as adjutant. This includes records of the seven cemeteries that we have been assigned to place over 1,000 flags on the veteran’s graves for Memorial Day.

The Post 969 Ladies Auxiliary members have not been meeting for the past year, because of the health issues of its members.

What to do will be discussed. All members and others are invited to attend. We will have refreshments after the meeting. Also, as an added attraction, we will have a recently received six ½-foot foot-by-7½-foot crazy quilt on display. Sewn into the quilt at the top is “Alexander Mabon, GAR Post 125, Sanborn, NY,” and below this are the names of 52 men from the local area that died during the Civil War. Also sewn into the quilt are a 38-star American Flag and a piece with “L.R. 1886.”

GAR Post 125 was the predecessor to Sanborn American Legion Post 969 that received its charter on June 12, 1924. Mary Small, of Colorado, who recently donated the quilt to SAHS, had displayed the quilt in the Legion Hall to 75 area residences 10 years ago, after noticing the ribbon and other items. She since has been researching on site where “her boys” died, where buried, etc. Other items about the quilt will also be on display.

For information contact Gerry Treichler at 716-731-9510 or email [email protected].
