Niagara County Legislator Shawn Foti announced registration is open for the county’s next household hazardous waste (HHW) collection event, which will be held Saturday, Sept. 17, in Newfane. The event is open to all Niagara County residents. Advanced registration is required.

“This is a great opportunity to clean out those hazardous waste items that may be in a corner of the basement or out in your garage,” Foti said. “And with the passage of the NY Paint Stewardship Law, we will now be accepting latex paint, as well. These events have always been popular with residents so, if you plan on attending, do not delay in registering.”

The event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon at the Town of Newfane Highway Garage located at 6176 McKee St. Register at www.rethinkyourwaste.com/events. Scroll down to the Newfane event. There is also a list of items that will be accepted for recycling posted to that website.

Niagara County Environmental Coordinator Dawn Timm said that, in the 10 years the HHW program has been operating, more than 900,000 pounds of harmful products have been removed from Niagara County homes.

“The steps we take to encourage the recycling of paint and other HHW in a responsible manner ensures these materials do not end up in our soil or in our water, protecting our local environment,” she said.
