The Erie County Fair, in partnership with Milk for Health, will honor WNY’s Dairy Farmer of the Year during “Dairy Day” at the Erie County Fair this August. The newly established event will be Thursday, Aug. 11, and will feature a variety of activities to showcase dairy farming and products.

CEO and Erie County Fair Manager Jessica Underberg said, “Growing up on a dairy farm, I completely understand the work that dairy farmers do each and every day. They are an important part of our communities, and are the backbone of our nation. We are proud to offer the new Dairy Farmer of the Year recognition and to be able to celebrate an all-new ‘Dairy Day’ at the Erie County Fair.”

The WNY Dairy Farmer of the Year designation will recognize both established and newer Western New York dairy farmers who exhibit outstanding management of their dairy farm business and provide leadership in the local dairy industry and/or their community.

Erie County Agricultural Society stated, “According to the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, New York is the nation’s fourth-largest dairy state. Dairy farmers are a dedicated part of the agriculture workforce. Their cows must be milked multiple times a day, 365 days a year.”

Milk for Health Executive Director Bethany Hobin said, “Milk for Health has the privilege of representing and working alongside the amazing dairy farmers here in Western New York. We are honored to showcase and award these hard-working people that keep the dairy industry in our area alive and well.”

Distinctions will be awarded to farms owned for 26-50 years, 11-25 years and 10 years or less. The winning nominees will receive this award at a special ceremony at the Erie County Fair.

To nominate a dairy farmer from any of the eight counties of Western New York, visit www.ECFair.org and complete the application form. Forms must be submitted by July 15 to be considered. A complete listing of activities and events for “Dairy Day” can be found under the “Special Days and Events” tab on the website.

The Erie County Agricultural Society is a private, not-for-profit membership organization. Established in 1819, it is the oldest civic organization in Western New York. The Erie County Fair sponsor’s mission is to preserve and enhance, by educational endeavors, the agricultural and historical legacy of New York state.

The Erie County Fair will be held Aug. 10-21. Visit www.ECFair.org.
