Arbor Day events scheduled for April 30

Grand Island’s Arbor Day celebration will be held on April 30 at the Community Center at the Nike Base, 3278 Whitehaven Road.

Events will include two guided walks and a presentation by Lori Brockelbank, from Davey Resource Group, about the results of a tree inventory that was completed in the fall of 2021.

“We hope to see you there for a walk in the woods and/or the presentation at noon. Spread the word,” said Diane Evans, Paul Yaeger and Suzanne Tomkins of the Grand Island Conservation Advisory Board in a press release.

The guided walks will be offered for all visitors at 10 a.m., as well as at 1 p.m. on the newly expanded Grand Island trail system at the Nike Base. It is expected the trails will be muddy, so visitors are advised to choose their footwear based on weather conditions.

The presentation on the tree inventory will be held at noon at the Community Center. According to Evans, Yaeger and Tomkins, “Lori will report on the interesting results of the tree survey and its implications for management in the coming years. Over a year ago, the Town of Grand Island received a grant from DEC to fund an inventory of our street trees and many of our park trees. The survey was completed by a team of arborists that Lori supervised in the fall of 2021. A management plan has also been created (yet to be adopted) to maintain and care for our tree resource.”

This event is made possible by the Grand Island Parks Department, the Conservation Advisory Board, and the town’s Tree Committee.
