The Niagara County Sheriff’s Office reported the following:

On March 22 at 2:52 p.m., the Niagara County Sheriff's Office Dispatch Center received notification of a fire alarm activation at the apartment building located at 6824 Plaza Drive in the Town of Wheatfield. A second call received a short time later reported smoke showing on the first floor of the three-floor structure.

NCSO deputies responded and confirmed an ongoing fire in one of the second-floor apartments. Following the evacuation of the building's tenants, the fire was subsequently extinguished by members of the Frontier, Bergholz, St. Johnsburg and Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station fire companies, which also responded to the scene.

The fire damage was isolated to the bathroom of the apartment where the fire began. The apartment was unoccupied at the time of the incident. The lower apartment adjacent to the fire also sustained water damage from the fire control efforts. No injuries were reported.

An investigation into the cause of the fire by the Niagara County Origin and Cause Team is underway.
