State leaders offer comment on VA Western New York Healthcare System

Joint statement by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and Congressman Brian Higgins on future of VA Western New York Healthcare System

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is undertaking an asset and infrastructure review (AIR), which involves making recommendations related to the future of the VA Western New York Healthcare System, including the Buffalo VA Hospital and the Batavia VA Medical Center.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and Congressman Brian Higgins released the following joint statement in response to the current recommendations:

“It is important to begin a discussion about the future of VA healthcare delivery in Western New York. The Buffalo and Batavia Medical Centers were constructed over 70 years ago and despite regular upgrades, are showing their age and limitations. We want the best possible care for veterans, because they deserve no less, and that includes careful planning of new and improved resources to serve veterans throughout the region. But details matter. Preserving and expanding access to the full range of VA healthcare services must be a priority. Local veterans and employees should be briefed on the recommendations and have a voice in the outcome. It is our duty to protect and serve those who have committed to protecting and serving this nation. We pledge to do that throughout this process.”
