When members of the Friends of the Library think of community service and volunteerism one person comes to mind: Mamie Simonson. She was the backbone of our organization for years. Not a project, fundraiser or event took place without Mamie Simonson’s involvement and always with her beautiful smile. Mamie passed away in 2016 and is fondly remembered by all of us.

To honor Mamie and to continue her legacy, this past year her son, Lee Simonson, donated $1,000 to start up a program to honor a “Volunteer of the Year” in memory of his late mother. Each year, a volunteer will be chosen from nominations from members of the Friends of the Library, library staff, board of directors or the general public to be recognized for the volunteer work with the Lewiston Library.

The Friends established a committee made of Friends officers and one member from the Friends committee to review nominations and to choose a recipient. The criteria that will be reviewed consists of specific actions or events the nominee was involved in, as well as overall strong volunteer qualifications.

Nomination forms can be found on the Lewiston Library website, www.lewistonpubliclibrary.org, the Lewiston Library Facebook page, or nomination forms can be found at the library front desk. Nomination forms were also included in the Friends of the Library February newsletter.

Friends of the Library are always looking for new members. If you are interested in attending a meeting and finding out what exactly the “Friends” do for our local library, we meet on the second Tuesday of each month in the Community Room. We would love if you could join us.

If you would like more information about the Friends of the Library, the Volunteer of the Year program, or would like to receive a nomination form, please contact JoAnne Lotterio, president of Friends of the Library, at 716-531-2313 or at [email protected].
