Local animal lovers stepped up big to donate to the City of Buffalo Animal Shelter as part of the “Betty White Challenge.” Some 500 donations, totaling $10,800, came into the shelter in honor of what would have been much-loved actress’ 100th birthday on Jan. 17.

“Thank you to Buffalo and Western New York residents for being a friend of the Buffalo Animal Shelter,” director Kelly McCartney said. “We had asked for donations of $5, so the outpouring of financial support greatly exceeded our expectations.”

The city’s shelter adopts out between 1,500 and 2,000 animals a year, while also helping homeless pets with medical and behavioral problems, so these animals can find a forever home.

Those interested in supporting the Buffalo Animal Shelter’s year-round efforts can visit https://friendsofcbas.org/donate. The site offers a variety of donation programs, which aid the city’s shelter.

“Golden Girls” star White, a long-time animal rescue supporter, passed away on Dec. 31, 2021, 18 days short of her milestone birthday. The “Betty White Challenge” assisted animal shelters and rescue organizations across the U.S.
