After nearly 20 years as a member of the Zoning Board of Appeals, including service as the board’s chairperson, Marion Fabiano has sent her letter of resignation to Town Supervisor John Whitney.

Prior to serving on the Zoning Board of Appeals, Fabiano served as a member of the Town Board during the 1990s.

At the Jan. 3 reorganization meeting of the Grand Island Town Board, Whitney said, “Marion has faithfully served on this board since February 2001.” He added, “We appreciate her dedication to service and to the residents of Grand Island” in that role, as well as “in addition to her time as a member of the Grand Island Town Board previous to that.”

Town Board member Mike Madigan said, “I can’t emphasize enough her contribution and the effort that she put in over those 20 years. This is a very important position she filled, and she was chairman as well. We are discussing further recognition of her efforts.”

Town Board member Pete Marston said, “I agree with Mike. She is going to be missed. She has been a resource for this town for decades. But probably, she thought that it was time.”

More from the Meeting

•A public hearing was set for Tuesday, Jan. 18, on Local Law No. 6 of 2021, the prosed rezoning of Baseline Road and Grand Island Boulevard from R-3 (multiple-family residential district), R-1D (medium-density single-family residential district) and CBD (central business district) to a planned development district (PDD) to accommodate Rivertown Center Holdings LLC’s proposed Rivertown development.

•Madigan introduced a resolution to the Grand Island Town Board questioning the overtime pay given to Erie County Health Commissioner Gale Burstein during the COVID-19 crisis. As there was no second to Madigan’s motion, there was no further discussion of the resolution.

•During the Town Board’s “round table” discussion at the end of the meeting, Madigan reported that “Officer Chris Soluri, one of our own residents and volunteer firefighter, was called into action” at Sunday’s Buffalo Bills game. “A person went into cardiac arrest, and (Soluri) was one of several people who assisted that individual and actually, through the use of an AED (automatic external defibrillator) and CPR, brought him back. Congratulations to Chris Soluri for a great job.”

•Marston challenged the high school seniors who are required to attend one Town Board meeting per year to answer the following statement, “Students, I sent some homework last time. Did you talk to your classmates at all?”

No one responded, so Marston said he would give the students a pass. He repeated the homework assignment. “On the Viking mall, there is a Viking on the wall. He has a shield. There are three words on the shield. What are they?”

The students have until the next Town Board meeting, set for Jan. 18, to complete their homework assignment, Marston said.
