Did you know the Erie County Fair has been held in nine different locations around Erie County since 1841, before calling Hamburg home?

In an effort to showcase those locations and keep people active throughout the summer, the “Summer Fit Challenge” has been created with support from Independent Health and Crunch Fitness. There have been 2-mile courses mapped out for each of the former locations of the Erie County Fair in the all-new challenge. People can take a walk, run or bike at each of the locations (a minimum of four) between June 8 and Aug. 8 to complete the challenge.

Past locations include West Seneca, East Aurora, Springville, several sites in Buffalo, South Buffalo and Orchard Park. Registration will include information about each of the locations, including a planned route, its history and landmark locations.

So, to complete the challenge:

√ Complete four of the eight routes between June 8 and Aug. 8. Run, walk, stroll, bike, or even skip the mapped-out areas.

√ Take a selfie at each challenge landmark located on each route.

√ Upload a picture to the photo submission page after each route is finished. A photo must be submitted for each challenge location visited.

Registration cost is $20 for an individual or $40 for a family of four. Register online at www.ecfair.org. Some of the proceeds will benefit the Erie County Agricultural Society scholarship fund.

Upon completion of the challenge, participants will receive a custom Oxford Pennant, special gift from Independent Health.

“Independent Health is proud to support this initiative that encourages physical movement and recreation in our region. We know that moving our bodies daily has many positive effects, including boosting our mood and protecting us from chronic disease. It can reduce or reverse problems associated with a sedentary lifestyle,” said Jennifer Picone, manager, corporate wellness, Independent Health. “The ‘Summer Fit Challenge’ provides a great opportunity to bike, walk, run and more along unique vantage points that showcase our beautiful city and the history of the Erie County Fair. It’s also another example of how we are working with a wide range of community partners to create a culture of health in Western New York.”

This year’s Erie County Fair will take place Aug. 11-22.
