Assemblyman Mike Norris is encouraging the public to partake in this weekend’s (April 24-25) RecruitNY event, which is an opportunity for the public to visit participating local fire companies to learn more about volunteering as firefighters or emergency medical technicians. His team said the need for volunteers is particularly high as the existing volunteer base ages and recruitment efforts have stalled due to the pandemic.

“Our local volunteer fire companies do so much for our communities. Not only do they save our lives in life-threatening emergencies, but they protect our property, boost community moral at events and save taxpayers billions of dollars annually,” said Norris, who has been a staunch advocates for volunteer fire companies. “They have always been there for us. Now they need our help. I encourage anyone aged 18 or older to stop by and learn more. There are great opportunities at our local fire companies – not only in terms of developing leadership skills, but also a growing list of tangible benefits as our way of saying thank you for your service.”

The release noted, “Some of the benefits of serving include tax breaks, college tuition reimbursement, scholarships, insurance coverage and health check-ups. Additionally, volunteers develop team-building skills, leadership skills, critical-thinking skills, problem-solving skills and specific on-site training. Volunteers also gain the camaraderie, sense of purpose and pride of serving their community.”
