Niagara County Legislator Tony Nemi and Pendleton Supervisor Joel Maerten said the Niagara County Department of Public Works will undertake a traffic safety review of Bear Ridge Road in Pendleton, where a merging lane from Tonawanda Creek has been the site of several accidents. Bear Ridge is a county-owned road.

“The county has heard from Town of Pendleton leaders, motorists and nearby residents about safety concerns at this intersection, which are most likely exacerbated by the increased volume of traffic on Bear Ridge from population growth in this area,” Nemi said.

He noted DPW will consider things such as traffic volume, the blind spot for drivers using the merge lane on the west side of road coming from Tonawanda Creek, and the speed motorists are traveling at as part of their review, and then make any appropriate recommendations.

Maerten said county DPW worked on the east side of Bear Ridge several years ago to redesign it in a way that made that lane safer, and that Erie County recently completed a project on the other side of the Bear Road Bridge that addressed a similar situation.

“I have communicated with Niagara County Department of Public Works Commissioner Garret Meal who committed to the traffic safety review, and I raised to him several ideas that have been proposed to me,” Maerten said. “Commissioner Meal said their review starts with looking at appropriate New York state road design standards and how the current configuration measures up to that, and then from there, they would look at alternatives. He said they would attempt to move this along quickly.”
