Western New York Independent Living Inc. (WNYIL) has been awarded $12,500, which was funded by the Town of Amherst’s CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security) Act Community Development Block Grant program, to support its food, medication and medical equipment delivery services to people with disabilities in Amherst.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, WNYIL’s transportation service, Independence Express (IE), which operates between 7:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. daily, has implemented its free delivery services.

A press release said, “Our drivers are taking grocery orders placed by people with disabilities to their residences, as well as picking up prescriptions, if needed, and delivering them. This safeguards vulnerable individuals from having to go out in public, while ensuring they don’t go hungry or without their much-needed medications. Many people with disabilities have underlying health conditions, which make them more susceptible than the average person to the most severe symptoms of COVID-19 and the life-threatening effects of the virus. To minimize their exposure to those who may carry the virus, we’ve redirected the IE transportation program to function primarily as a delivery service.

“If you’re a person with a disability who resides in the Town of Amherst and would like to participate in our agency’s delivery services, please call 716-836-0822, ext. 126, for additional information.”

The WNYIL family of agencies offers an expanding array of services to aid individuals with disabilities to take control of their own lives.
