Unusual.
That’s the word so many people are using to describe this Easter weekend.
With “New York State on PAUSE,” and its residents staying home to stop the spread of COVID-19, families will be apart. Churches will be closed. Stores are shut.
But that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate.
Easter is still on!
On Saturday, Lewiston Fire Co. No. 1 was back out with the Easter Bunny, driving him down residential neighborhoods so children and families could wave, clap or take pictures. Other fire companies had similar ideas, with stops planned throughout the River Region.
Pastries and baked goods were available to purchase from DiCamillo Bakery – where patrons took particular note (and applauded) the safety measures put in place to protect customers and staff.
Other locally owned Center Street businesses had colorful signs, cutouts and stuffed animals prominently placed in the windows.
In Wheatfield, Niagara County Legislator Jesse Gooch gave out 100 free hams for seniors in need. He setup a drive-thru in the Town Hall parking lot, thus keeping everyone safe and physically separated.
On Easter Sunday, myriad churches will offer services online via their websites and social media channels.
As part of her LCTV community update, Niagara County Legislature Chairwoman Becky Wydysh said, “We ask that you find new ways to connect on this Easter weekend. I know many families who are having big family dinners by Zoom. They're all going to connect through their computers and share a dinner together from a safe distance.”
She encouraged her constituents to find ways to remotely reach out to “those neighbors who might be alone; who don't have family to connect with; especially on a holiday that can be very isolating, even in normal times.”
