Kaleida Health participating in experimental therapies for current patients; local eateries donate food

Kaleida Health released the following updates regarding the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic on Wednesday and Thursday:

Kaleida Health Participating In Experimental Therapies For Current Patients – Eligible COVID-19 patients at Buffalo General Medical Center and Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital will begin participating in a number of FDA-approved experimental therapy options as early as this week. These therapies include a clinical trial of the arthritis medication, sarilumab; convalescent plasma infusions for critically ill patients as a way of introducing antibodies from individuals that have fully recovered from COVID-19; and the use of a promising antiviral medication, Remdesivir.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Donations – In a continued effort to keep the workforce safe and healthy, Kaleida Health’s purchasing and supply chain teams have been relentless in reaching out to every possible vendor and business partner to secure additional equipment, supplies and personal protective equipment for staff, providers, patients and visitors. Over the past few days, Kaleida Health received large donations of masks, gowns, gloves, face shields and hand sanitizer from partners at the Erie County Department of Health, Niagara County Department of Health and Harbor Freight Tools.

Kaleida Health Coronavirus Statistics (as of 1 p.m. Thursday):

•Buffalo General Medical Center

  • Inpatients: 37 confirmed cases currently in-house (19 in ICU, 18 in medical unit)
  • 41 in-house who are under investigation
  • 65 additional patients were tested, but are negative

•Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital

  • Inpatients: 39 confirmed cases currently in-house (14 in ICU, 25 in medical unit)
  • 24 in-house who are under investigation
  • 24 additional patients were tested, but are negative

•DeGraff Memorial Hospital

  • 0 confirmed case currently in-house
  • 1 in-house who is under investigation
  • 1 additional patient was tested, but is negative

•Oishei Children’s Hospital

  • Inpatients: 0 confirmed cases currently in-house
  • 3 in-house who are under investigation
  • 16 additional patients were tested, but are negative

Foundations Help Provide Over 12,000 Meals For Workforce – This week, the foundations of Kaleida Health worked with local restaurants and community partners to provide over 12,000 meals to the dedicated staff across Kaleida Health (see attached photo).

Thanks to the generosity of Chick-fil-A Cheektowaga, Joe’s Deli, Osteria 166, Rachel’s Mediterranean and others, meals have and will continue to be delivered to the hardworking doctors, nurses and staff at Kaleida Health.

Ambulatory Clinics – In an effort to continue safely delivering high-quality care to patients during the coronavirus pandemic, Kaleida Health’s more than 30 adult and pediatric outpatient clinics across Western New York remain open and have transitioned to offering telemedicine services via audio and/or video conferencing.
