NCCC explores space

As part of the “Faculty Keynote Series” at Niagara County Community College, Dr. Matthew Clarcq will present a lecture, “To the Moon and Back Again: The Space Race, Buffalo-Niagara and the Impossible Task.” The event will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 4, in Room E-140 on the Sanborn campus, 3111 Saunders Settlement Road.

This talk will place the space race into the context of the 1950s and 1960s. It will show how President John F. Kennedy’s audacious timeline required remarkable teamwork and sacrifice, highlighting the critical contributions from the Buffalo-Niagara Region. The speaker will try to explain why the moon landings did not lead to other manned space exploration.

Clarcq holds a B.A. in history from SUNY Geneseo and a Master’s Degree and Ph.D. from the University at Buffalo. He has taught at NCCC for 16 years and received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2010. He currently chairs the NCCC Student Showcase.
