“The Art of Suffrage” exhibit will be on display at the Kenan Center in Lockport from Feb. 9 to March 29. The multimedia exhibit celebrates the centennial anniversary of the 19th Amendment’s ratification with artifacts from the collection of local activist Mary Brennan Taylor as the centerpiece. The collection includes ephemera such as magazines, buttons, post cards, sheet music and more from the 72-year period when trailblazing suffragists fought for their right to vote.

In addition to the collection of authentic memorabilia, “The Art of Suffrage” exhibit will also include short films and original art paying homage to some of the most influential women of the movement. Among the original art is a physical jail cell, being built as a reminder of the struggles and sacrifices of suffragist icons such as Alice Paul, Susan B. Anthony, Lucy Burns, Harriet Tubman and Carrie Chapman Catt.

There will also be other interactive displays included in the exhibit such as life-size cutouts of famous suffragists and a real voting booth. Attendees can also visit the voter registration station and sign up to vote.

Sponsored by the Kenan Center and the Niagara Arts Trail, the exhibit will begin with an opening reception from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9. Additional events planned throughout the exhibit include a “Tea & Tour” on Feb. 23 and a one-woman show about the life of Anthony on March 21. There will also be discussions with authors Mary Walton and Tina Cassidy on Feb. 28 and March 7, respectively. More information about these events is available on the Kenan Center’s website.

A press release noted, “ ‘The Art of Suffrage’ will tell the gritty, inspiring story of the suffragist movement, from its humble beginnings at Seneca Falls, New York, in 1848 through the ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920. The exhibit is a production of the Lockport Public Arts Council and Mary Brennan Taylor and was made possible by the support of the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center, the Grigg Lewis Foundation, Humanities New York and the Arts Services Institute of Western New York.”
